Explore Malta’s strategic role during WWII and uncover how British rule shaped the island’s military legacy from 1798 to 1979.
This is the only tour in Malta dedicated solely to the island’s British history. Discover why the British came to Malta, how they shaped its history, and why they eventually left. This tour offers a deep dive into military strategies, underground life during wartime, and the enduring legacy of British presence on the island.
The journey begins in Vittoriosa (Birgu), where we’ll examine fortifications that date back to the Knights of St. John and were later repurposed by the British. We will descend into the maze-like underground Air Raid Shelters, carved into solid rock and expanded during the bombings. These shelters provide an immersive insight into the living conditions of civilians during what was referred to as the Second Great Siege of Malta.
After a short guided walk through Vittoriosa, we continue by bus to Valletta. Our guide will take you to the Upper Barrakka Gardens for panoramic views of the Grand Harbour — the primary British naval base and strategic target during WWII.
As we explore the streets of Valletta, you’ll encounter key WWII and colonial landmarks including:
Along the way, your guide will share expert insights into Malta’s pivotal wartime role, its colonial journey under British rule, and the island’s road to independence.
